Chi era William Shakespeare? È veramente esistito o si tratta di uno pseudonimo dietro al quale si nascondeva Marlowe? La regina Elisabetta? Il siciliano Guglielmo Crollalanza?
Shakespeare in persona racconta con ironia di se stesso, della sua vita e, soprattutto, delle sue opere. Partendo dalla spiegazione del verso che tanto ha utilizzato, il pentametro giambico, spaziando dalla sua rivalità con Marlowe al rapporto con la regina Elisabetta, Shakespeare si mostra un appassionato conoscitore della natura umana.
Sorseggiando una tazza di tè, Shakespeare diventa Romeo, Lady Macbeth, Riccardo III, ci avvicina a ciascuno di loro come se i personaggi potessero parlarci personalmente di sé e ci mostra le storie e i drammi che ha scritto, così come li ha concepiti.
